Rick is a testament to the power of community, leadership, and personal growth. At 73 years old, he has played an integral role in fostering a vibrant Aeon community. His story isn’t just about overcoming adversity; it’s about embracing change, cultivating relationships, and contributing to a space that has given him so much.
Rick moved into his Aeon apartment after being on a waitlist at a local shelter 13 years ago, and he quickly realized that it was more than just a place to live. It became a home—one that nourished his personal growth and even improved his physical health. As a long-time resident, he’s seen how the community fosters meaningful connections, both with neighbors and with the staff at Aeon. His life today is a stark contrast to when he first arrived, thanks to the support of his community, including his fiancée, who lives on the same floor, and a younger man, “his buddy,” who has become like a son to him.
A key element of Rick’s growth has been his deep involvement in the community. Since he moved in 12 years ago, he has been a driving force behind activities at his building. He’s seen how dances, chili cook-offs, the annual fall festival, and the National Night Out picnic have built a sense of meaningful connection amongst his neighbors. In addition, his role as a member of the Tenant Council has allowed him to channel his passion for community-building, and his participation has become a source of pride for him.
Rick’s leadership also manifested in a monthly newsletter he created with a fellow resident. The newsletter featured articles written by Rick, including his popular column “Rick’s Rants,” which humorously addressed issues in the building in a way that brought people together.
In May 2019, Rick joined Aeon’s Board. He knew he wanted to have a voice in shaping the future of the organization and saw the board as a way to give back for the opportunities he had been given. “We’re the ones living here every day,” he said, “so I bring a unique perspective. I feel like I’m able to contribute, and it’s important to me to be involved in moving the mission of Aeon forward.” Rick also enjoys attending supporter events as a board member.
His time at Aeon has led Rick to become a more self-assured, confident person, who now feels capable of contributing to many aspects of life in the building and across the organization. One of his neighbors once told him that he was like a “human Switzerland,” referencing his ability to get along with everyone. Rick credits his growth to his willingness to prioritize relationships and his desire to be helpful to others.
As Rick celebrates 13 years at Aeon this March, his story stands as a reminder of how deeply a community can shape personal growth and purpose!
